LONDON — One of the world’s most eligible bachelors is officially off the market. Britain’s Prince Harry is engaged to American actress Meghan Markle, royal officials announced Monday.
After the announcement, Harry confessed he had long known he would propose to Markle.
The announcement of their engagement ended days of fevered speculation by the British news media, some of which, in anticipation of the event, tried to find any royal connection with Ms. Markle. The pair began dating about a year and a half ago, when they were introduced by a mutual friend. They were first photographed together in December of 2016, while shopping for a Christmas tree.
Their first appearance together in September at the Invictus Games was the time when rumors of an engagement started
Prince Harry’s reputation has changed markedly in recent years. In his younger days, he acknowledged wanting to be a bad boy but he has emerged as possibly Britain’s most popular royal.As a rebellious youth, he partied heavily, including an episode in 2005, when he wore a Nazi costume with a swastika armband, just weeks before his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, was scheduled to lead Holocaust memorial ceremonies.
Meghan Markle stars in the TV drama “Suits,” now in its seventh season on the USA cable network. The show is filmed in Toronto. Harry, who served two tours of Afghanistan with the British army, has visited her in the Canadian city several times .Markle was in a relationship with actor and producer Trevor Engelson between 2004 and 2013, marrying on September 10, 2011 and divorcing in August 2013. Since June 2016, she has been in a relationship with Prince Harry who is fifth in line for the British throne, they intend to marry in spring 2018. Their relationship has been compared to that of Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson.
